AUC Executive Council adopts Strategic plan for 2017

Emnet Assefa

Erastus Muencha, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, said the executive council of the African union has adopted a strategic plan for the next three years.

Economic development, regional integration, peace and stability, governance, human capital, science and technology, innovation, agriculture, environment and natural resources, and gender equality are issues that the Strategic plan placed as priority, according to Muencha.

The Executive Council has also adopted a $308 million as the Commission’s budget for 2014 in line with the strategic plan. Peace and security, socioeconomic and human development departments alone take 55% of the budget while institutional capacity building and communication have 25% of it.

According to the Deputy, 42% of AUC’s development budget comes from foreign sources while the rest comes from domestic sources such as member state contribution. “Realizing that resources are hard to come by these days Africa does its best to divert to domestic resources,” Muencha said.
