Of myths and truth

Faben Getachew

When it comes to nutrition it can be very difficult to tell between what is a fact and what is a myth. Indeed, myths about nutrition have been around for so many years, that most of us have accepted them as facts. For this month I’m encouraging us to be 100% diet craze free!

Myth #1: Not eating breakfast aids in weight loss.

The truth is skipping breakfast doesn’t help lose weight; it can actually make you gain weight! According to many researches regular breakfast skippers are more likely to be overweight. The main argument behind it? They would most likely be very hungry by mid morning and reach for unhealthy snacks and overeat at lunch and throughout the day. Of course missing breakfast does not necessarily mean you are going to become fat but it is the worst strategy to cut off calories.  The word itself says it: everybody should break- the- fast of the eight hours of sleep and make time for a healthy breakfast also because a healthy breakfast will help kick off the metabolic rate for the day.

‘Tea is a cup of life,’ so goes an ancient saying.  It indeed is. The Chinese knew all too well about the health benefits of tea since ancient times, and have used it to treat many diseases ranging from headaches to depression. Nowadays tea consumption has markedly increased all over the world.

Tea is obtained from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant but we can find many varieties of it depending on growing conditions, harvesting time and the way the leaves are processed. Currently all teas fall under three big categories: Oolong, Black, and Green tea. Oolong tea is partially fermented and black tea is fully fermented. Green tea, on the other hand, is the least processed and thus rich in health promoting antioxidants.

Health benefits

The secret behind the health benefit of green tea is its richness in catechin polyphenols and particularly in the powerful antioxidant EGCG. This antioxidant has been given credit for the protection of the human body against various types of cancers. In fact green tea kills cancer cells without harming healthy ones and prevents different types of cancers including colon, breast, lung, skin, cervical, prostate and gastric cancers. It is also used in the fight against the human papilloma virus (HPV) which is responsible for genital warts and Herpes.

Faben Getachew

There is no medical treatment for food allergy, but there are few things one can do to prevent a likely scenario

From the February edition of Addis Standard magazine

Food allergy is an adverse immune response to food and it is generally set off by proteins in food that are resistant to digestion and go into the bloodstream as allergens. What happens next is that the body erroneously recognizes these proteins as harmful and thinking that the body is under attack it produces antibodies and triggers allergic reactions. These reactions may vary from mild to life-threatening.
