PARIS – It is easy to discuss the deadly attack on Charlie Hebdo as an attack on freedom of expression. But are we supposed to be surprised that a global terror organization known for its brutal disregard for human rights and humane values would attack a media outlet that has specialized in provoking it?

Just as much of the social media in the Arab/Muslim world has routinized anti-Semitic rants, there is a global industry of outlets dedicated to all things anti-Muslim. In any given week, French, European, (and increasingly Indian) journalists, bloggers, tweeters, and others regularly express all sorts of things that are offensive or provocative to Muslims – or at least the most devout and fanatical among them.

European Year for Development kicks off

New figures published on a special Eurobarometer show that the number of people who are in favor of increasing aid has gone up significantly, and Europeans continue to feel positive about development and cooperation. According to the special Eurobarometer 67% of respondents across Europe think that development aid should be increased – “a higher percentage than in recent years, despite the economic situation.” The EU also said, 85% believe that it is important to help people in developing countries.

Addis Abeba – Merck, a leading company for innovative and top-quality, high-tech products in the pharmaceutical, chemical and life science sectors, today announced that Ethiopia will receive around 13 million praziquantel tablets in 2015. Merck supports the World Health Organization (WHO) to fight the parasitic worm disease schistosomiasis in Africa. Praziquantel is the most effective treatment for schistosomiasis.
