Ethiopia sees 72% surge in coffee exports, $797 million earned in five months
Addis Abeba – The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority has reported that the country generated $797 million from the export of 178,000 metric tons of coffee during the first five months of the current fiscal year. This represents a 72% increase in export volume and a 55% rise in revenue compared to the same period last year.
In an interview with state media, Shafi Umar, Deputy Director-General and Head of Marketing at the Authority, revealed that Ethiopia exceeded its export target of 117,000 metric tons during the last five months, shipping over 178,000 metric tons of coffee to the global market.
According to Shafi, Ethiopia is poised to achieve a significant milestone by generating $1 billion from the export of over 200,000 metric tons of coffee by the midpoint of the current fiscal year.
Coffee is Ethiopia’s primary export commodity, accounting for over a quarter of its annual export earnings. The industry also sustains over six million farmers and supports the livelihoods of more than ten million individuals engaged in the coffee supply chain.
In the previous fiscal year, Ethiopia exported 298,000 metric tons of coffee, yielding $1.43 billion in revenue. For the current fiscal year, the country has set an ambitious target of increasing exports to 400,000 metric tons, with the aim of exceeding $2 billion in export earnings. AS
