A fire that originated from inside the building has destroyed most of Taitu Hotel, the first Hotel in Ethiopia that was opened in 1895 and named after Empress Taitu.
According to the Addis Abeba city Fire department, the fire in early Sunday has damaged most of the wooden structure building and its historic artifacts before it was put under control .In addition to its cheap lodging for backpacker tourists, the historic hotel also houses banks, travel agencies and one of the city’s famous Jazz Clubs, Jazz Amba.
The Associated Press quoted Commander Tadesse Gemechu of the Fire department as saying two people were taken to the hospital after being rescued from the fire.
“Tadesse says the cause of the fire is being investigated. Many of the hotel’s rooms, its historic pieces and a bank office were completely burned down before firefighters put out the fire,” the AP said. “The city’s famous jazz club that used to be frequented by foreigners and locals alike, Jazz Amba, was also completely destroyed by the inferno.”
