Ethiopian Parliament to swear in Hailemariam this Friday

The national parliament has been called from its recess to reconvene on Friday 21st September to swear in Prime Minister-in-wait Hailemariam Desalgen.

The Council of Ethiopia’s ruling party, the Ethiopian Peoples’ Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), elected Hailemariam Desalegn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, to become its chairman replacing the late PM Meles Zenawi in its regular session on 14th and 15th of September.

Although, according the party’s tradition, the party chairman is automatically the nation’s Prime Minister, the national parliament must swear in the person first.

Following the election as Chairman of Hailemariam, Bereket Simon, government’s communication affairs chief said there was no rush to reconvene the parliament before its scheduled time in “early October.”

However, according to a close source approached by Addis Standard, Hailemariam is due to attend the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on the Rule of Law at National and International Level scheduled to take place on Sep. 24th for which Hailemariam needed to represent Ethiopia as its head of government.
