Addis Abeba – Embassy of India in Addis Abeba said it has organized a full day ‘Eye Care Camp’ and examined 450 Ethiopians on Saturday Dec. 13th. In a statement the Embassy said it carried out the Eye Care Camp at the Embassy of India Premises in collaboration with the Indian Medical Professionals Forum and the Indian Women’s Association
The Eye Care Camp was conducted by doctors and technicians from the OIA India Eye Care Centre, Addis Abeba. Volunteers from the Indian Women’s Association and Embassy staff have also assisted.
“The Camp was an effort to extend basic eye care services and checking to those who have no access to eye care facilities,” the statement said. Accordingly, the Camp focused on examining and evaluating eye patients for refractive errors and basic cataract and glaucoma diagnosis, performing basic retinal check-up, especially for diabetic patients, checking blood pressure, examining and performing tests like Intra Ocular Pressure to prescribe glasses, providing basic essential eye medicines and glasses at affordable costs, and referring some patients to the OIA India Eye Care Centre for further investigations and follow-up treatment.
“The Embassy has encouraged and organized this Community Ophthalmology Program as a gesture from the Indian community in Ethiopia to reach out to their less fortunate Ethiopian brothers and sisters.”
Three ophthalmologists and technical experts from the OIA India Eye Care Centre provided the required medical check-up and assistance to the patients. Free medicines and reading glasses at discounted rates were also distributed to the patients.
