Addis Abeba – The Ministry of Transport and Logistics has announced that electric vehicle (EV) importers and local assemblers are required to install electric vehicle charging stations before commencing operations.

According to the ministry, over 400 companies are currently engaged in the importation and distribution of electric vehicles.

Berho Hassan, State Minister for Transport and Logistics, noted that many of these companies have already set up charging stations. “All entities must ensure they have proper charging infrastructure in place,” he emphasized.

Worku Desta, Deputy Head of the Addis Ababa City Transport Bureau, also revealed that charging stations are being constructed in parking facilities as part of the second phase of the Corridor Development Project.

Additionally, he mentioned that studies are underway to repurpose existing fuel stations in the city for electric vehicle charging. “A study is in progress to transition fuel stations in Addis Ababa into charging stations for electric vehicles,” Worku disclosed.

In May 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics announced the government’s plan to introduce nearly 500,000 EVs over the next decade as part of its ongoing transition to electric mobility.

A statement from the ministry highlighted that the initial 10-year strategic plan aimed to import approximately 148,000 electric cars and 48,555 electric buses between 2021 and 2030. However, this target was met within the first two years of implementation. Consequently, the government has revised its national strategy, setting a new objective to import 439,000 EVs within the same 10-year period. AS
