Former President of Oromia regional State Alemayehu Atomsa dies

Alemayehu Atomsa, former chairman of the Oromo Peoples’ Democratic Organization (OPDO), one of the four parties that make up the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), and president of the Oromia regional state, the largest regional state in the country, has died of his illness.

According to reports, Alemayehu, who has resigned from his post on Feb. 17th, has been in critical condition as of March 4th. Shortly after his appointment as chairman of the OPDO and President of the Oromia regional state in 2010, Alemayehu has been taken ill by what many say is related to cancer and was a permanent absentee from his office. He has been receiving medical treatment in and outside of the country since then.

Following his resignation, the party has announced Muktar Kadir, one of the three deputy Prime Ministers who is responsible to oversee the country’s civil service reform program, to be the next chairman of the OPDO. He was 45 and was survived by his wife and three kids, two girls and a boy.
