USAID to support Central Statistical Agency for 2016 Ethiopia demographic and health survey
The 2016 survey will build on previous surveys and strengthen capacity of local organizations
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ethiopia Central Statistical Agency (CSA) today signed an agreement to begin planning for the 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey. The survey, partially funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), will provide current and reliable data on fertility and family planning behavior, child mortality, children’s nutritional status, use of maternal and child health services, family planning, knowledge and prevalence of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia.
Researchers, policy makers, and program managers in Ethiopia and throughout the world will use data from the 2016 survey for informed policy decisions, planning, monitoring, and evaluation of programs on health in general, and reproductive health in particular; at both the national and regional levels.
In implementing the country’s 4th demographic and health survey, ICF International will provide technical assistance to the Central Statistical Agency allowing the agency to independently plan, conduct, process, and analyze data from complex national population and health surveys.
The Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey receives technical assistance from USAID’s demographic and health surveys program, which provides assistance to countries worldwide in the collection, analysis, and use of data. By using the same methodology, surveys can be compared over the years, allowing for trend analysis and comparison to other neighboring countries and inclusion in global and regional analyses.
“The demographic and health survey program is the gold standard in household surveys. Project staff will provide technical assistance to the CSA at every stage of the survey, from sampling, to field work, to data processing,” said USAID Ethiopia Mission Director Dennis Weller. “The Ministry of Health and CSA will continue to use these skills long after the 2016 survey has been completed.”
The 2016 survey results will be useful to assess the achievements made in reaching the Millennium Development Goals by the end of 2015.
Data collection is expected to start in February 2016.
