Senior government officials led by PM Abiy Ahmed are discussing GERD performance report document presented by Dr. Seleshi.

Addis Abeba, May 11/2020 – Senior government officials led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed are discussing a document presented by Seleshi Bekele, (PhD), Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, on progress report of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), state media reported.

The meeting is being attended by senior officials including deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mokonnen, Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew and army chief of staff, General Adem Mohammed, among others.

The performance report presented by Dr. Seleshi indicated that the civil engineering part of the GERD has reached 87% completion while the general construction progress has reached 73 %. The document also presented that preparations were completed to begin the first phase filling as of the coming July 2020.

Dr. Seleshi is also quoted as saying that Ethiopia was preparing a counter document as a response to Egypt’s complaint letter submitted to the UN Security Council. He added that Ethiopia was no longer going to participate in the Washington D.C. negotiated talks unless the talks are open for further negotiations.

Despite initial agreements both from Egypt and Sudan with regard to Ethiopia’s proposal of the first phase filling of the dam, both countries have now refused to consider Ethiopia’s proposal when asked to get the document. However, it was indicated that Ethiopia wants a return to the tripartite discussions based on previous principles and the principles of African solutions for African problems, the state media further said.

According to a report this morning published on Wazema Radio, the US government has issued another note warning Ethiopia not to begin the filling of the dam before the completion of negotiations.

Following Ethiopia’s refusal to take part in the D.C talks, in February this year, the US has warned Ethiopia that the “final testing and filling should not take place without an agreement.” AS
