News: Ethiopian CEO says regular flights to Tigray capital to resume tomorrow
Addis Abeba – Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, told local media this morning that the Airlines will resume regular flights to Mekelle, the capital of Tigray region, as of Wednesday v28 December. The CEO first announced that the Airlines was making preparations to resume its regular flights on 23 November, but flights have not resumed since.
Mesfin, who was a part of the senior federal government delegation who paid a day-long visit to Mekelle on Tuesday, confirmed that the Mekelle Alula Aba Nega Airport is in a good condition for flights.
Accordingly, Ethiopian Airlines will resume a once a day regular domestic flight as of Wednesday, which will be increased based on the needs of customers.
The CEO also mentioned that works were being done to resume suspended flight activities to all the destinations located in the Tigray region.
Like all services, Ethiopian Airlines flights, which were functioning when the federal government was in control of Tigray region, were terminated as of 28 June 2021 when Tigrayan forces took control of much of Tigray, including its capital Mekelle.
In November, the CEO mentioned that among the airports in the region, Mekelle and Shire airports were in good condition and convenient to resume flights. However, the airport in Axum airport, one of Ethiopia’s top tourist destinations, is damaged in the conflict and needs to be repaired and adjusted to make it suitable for flights. AS
