News: Monument of slain army chief General Seare Mekonnen inaugurated in Addis Abeba

Inauguration of a monument honoring General Seare Mekonon, chief of staff of Ethiopia’s national defense forces.

Addis Abeba – A monument to General Seare Mekonon, former Chief of Staff of the National Defense Forces of Ethiopia, has been inaugurated near Bole Rwanda bridge in the capital, Addis Abeba.

Wife and family members of General Seare Mekonen, Defense Minister Abraham Bai (PhD), Addis Ababa City Administration Mayor Adanech Abebe, Generals, General Seare’s former colleagues, and invited guests attended the monument inauguration ceremony.

It has been stated that the Addis Ababa city administration had contributed in arranging the place and construction of the statue.

The late Army Chief General Seare and his close friend, Maj-Gen Gezai Abera, a retired general, were both shot and killed by the bodyguard of the former, who has since been convicted. 

Both were shot and killed at the residence of Gen Seare in Addis Abeba on Saturday, 22 June 2019. 

Their killing was preceded by a string of assassinations in the same day of Ambachew Mekonnen (PhD), President of Amhara regional state, Migbaru Kebede, the Attorney General of Amhara regional state, and Ezez Wasse, the regional administration’s public organization advisor, in Bahir Dar. AS
